Our Camp Philosophy

Welcome to our Kids Jiu-Jitsu Summer Camp. Our goal is to provide a safe, structured, and positive environment where children can build confidence, learn effective skills, and develop respect, discipline, and teamwork.

We are committed to creating an experience that is both fun and meaningful, while maintaining clear expectations for behavior and safety.

  • Student Expectations

To ensure a safe and productive environment, all students are expected to follow 5 core themes:

    1. Be Respectful
      • Treat coaches and teammates with kindness.
      • Use appropriate language and behavior.
    2. Follow Directions
      • Listen when instructors are speaking.
      • Follow instructions the first time.
    3. Train Safely
      • Only practice techniques under supervision.
        • No rough housing or unsafe behavior.
        • Everyone is sovereign and has to agree to train, no exceptions.
      • Tap early and release immediately.
    4. Show Effort & Positive Attitude
      • Try their best during all activities.
      • Stay engaged and participate.
    5. Be a Good Teammate - We build each other up
      • Help and encourage others.
      • Take turns and cooperate.
  • Behavior Expectations

To maintain a safe environment, the following steps may be used if expectations are not met:

    • Verbal reminder: Using “I statements” to bring attention back to our team rules.
    • Light Calisthenics (planks, wall-sits, push-ups, etc).
    • Brief reset or sit-out.
    • Parent notification.
    • Removal from activity or camp (if necessary for safety).

Serious behaviors (bullying, unsafe conduct, repeated disrespect) may result in immediately contacting a parent.

  • Parent / Guardian Expectations

    Parents and guardians agree to:

    1. Support a Safe Environment
      • Keep children home if sick or contagious. Our camp will have lots of time with close contact to train, please help us keep all the children safe.
      • Inform staff of injuries, medical needs, or concerns. We want your children to be safe and happy.
    2. Be Timely
      • Ensure on-time drop-off and pick-up. We all have children and jobs, please communicate if something comes up. We are here to support you and your family.
      • Communicate absences or delays. Just text Coach Will.
    3. Reinforce Expectations
      • Encourage respect, discipline, and teamwork.
      • Support staff in maintaining a positive learning environment. We support you and appreciate your support in return! Thank you!
    4. Maintain Communication
      • Address questions or concerns respectfully with staff. We believe in continually working to better ourselves, our Jiu-Jitsu, our teaching, and our program. We will be open to feedback and seek your input.
  • Building Our Team Rules & Camp Culture

    Our Approach

At the start of camp, we take time to build our team rules together with the students rather than simply giving them a list of rules to follow.

This approach helps children better understand expectations, take ownership of their behavior, and feel more connected to the team.

    Day 1 Team Meeting

On Day 1, after check-in and introductions, Coach Will will lead a short, structured group discussion with all students to establish our team rules and expectations.

Students will be guided through age-appropriate questions focused on:

    • Safety
    • Respect
    • Listening and focusing
    • Teamwork
    • Effort and attitude

    How the Process Works

Students will be asked to share their ideas about:

    • What helps everyone stay safe during training.
    • How teammates should treat each other.
    • What it means to listen and learn.
    • How to be a good partner.
    • What to do when something is challenging.

Coaches will guide these conversations to ensure that all essential safety and behavior standards are clearly addressed.

    Turning Ideas into Team Rules

As students share their input, coaches will help organize their responses into simple, clear team rules such as:

    • “We keep each other safe.”
    • “We listen the first time.”
    • “We help our teammates.”
    • “We try our best.”

We will write the rules down together and keep them posted in the academy for the week. These rules reflect both student input and the expectations required for a safe and productive training environment.

    Building Ownership & Accountability

Once established, students will be asked to agree to these team rules.

    This process encourages:

    • Personal responsibility.
    • Peer accountability.
    • A stronger sense of belonging.
  • Reinforcing the Rules

Throughout camp, coaches will revisit these team rules and use them as a foundation for instruction, encouragement, and behavior correction.

    Why This Approach Matters

Our approach is grounded in principles of child development and learning science.

Children learn best when they are actively involved, rather than simply told what to do. By engaging students in creating their own team expectations, we support:

    • Ownership and Responsibility: Children are more likely to follow rules they helped create.
    • Deeper Understanding: They learn why safety and respect matter.
    • Social Development: Students practice communication, listening, and cooperation.
    • Confidence and Voice: Every child has the opportunity to contribute.

This approach encourages learners to be more self-directed, accountable, and engaged.

    Parent & Student Agreement

By participating in camp, families acknowledge and agree to the expectations outlined above.
